I just recently upgraded a load of hardware on my pc, getting a new motherboard (bioware, new-ish one not sure which model) an AMD athlon x64 processor and1gb of ram. i also wanted to re-install xp as i had to format my hard drive. However i installed it and every time it tries to boot it comes up with ‘invalide boot.ini file. booting from c:\windows’ then restarts. I have tried using repair to add the windows installation to boot.ini, as well as re-installing windows multiple times but to no success. any ideas? I am hoping it is not some sort of compatibility conflict with the hard drive, as it is relatively new (a Seagate 80gb) and so should work ok with the hardware. Anyways any help would be appreciated

I’m trying to get my mother-in-laws computer up to date and when I try to go to windows update it tells me my security settings are set not to allow ActiveX so I reset them to allow it and it still tells me that it will not allow it. And if you’re wondering yes I hit the apply button. I’m just confused… I’ve never had such problems… Oh yeah, she’s running XP home w/no service packs.

How many computers can you install a copy of win-XP Pro on with only one COA??
I heard it was 3 computers. Is this true?

I put a DVD in and it opens up with Media Center (I have Windows XP Media Center Edition.) If the DVD is removed while Media Center is still running, I get an error “Windows – Wrong Volume” that gives me three choices: Cancel, Try Again, or Continue. Clicking on any of the three just makes the error pop right back up. I can’t end the task. I tried killing the process tree and it tells me it’s a critical system task and can’t be terminated. Is there ANY way to get rid of this error without (a) putting the original disc back in, or (b) rebooting? It’s crazy that you can’t just cancel to get rid of this error!

installing updates for windows security fails to install in wins XP home edition, I’ve been looking at an answer saying reformat the hard drive, but this sounds abit dodgy to me. or is it genuine. I’ve got to have these updates because Panda Internet Security is going crazy with prompts, your browser is being high jacked

If I had a copied version of Windows XP, could I buy a legitimate upgrade version & then get the updates, or do you need a genuine version to upgrade from?

ok, last night I installed mcafee on my pc, after that every time I’ve tried shutting down the pc it won’t! I’m now suspecting it’s Mcafee that’s causing it, as before I installed Mcafee, the pc was fine and had no problems while I had Bitdefender. But then again I’m confused because I have the mcafee installed in my Vista Laptop which is working absolutely fine.
So whats the problem? Please can someone help me out with a solution. Thanks in advance!

Everytime I click on a .wmv or .mpg file on windows (even just single clicking) my computer locks up and I get a “windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close” message. I’ve tried switching the default movie program, but that doesnt help. Any suggestions?
