Can I use Shrink feature in win Vista to create new partition and then install win xp on new partition?

Thursday 20 September 2007 @ 8:59 pm
win xp

I have a 250 GB space in Drive C having win Vista installed in it. I want to create a new partition (Drive D for example) without losing any data in drive C including its programs and saved games.

I read somewhere about the Shrink feature win Vista, making it possible for us to shrink the partition and create another partition. However, I have some questions:

1. Will it corrupt the data (saved games) stored in my Drive C if I use the win vista’s shrink feature?
2. Is it going to cause any problems if I install win XP after win Vista?
3. Compatability issues? Stable? to have a dual OS, drive C – Vista and drive D – XP.

Any advice and suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Regarding ARES Galaxy P2P Filesharing Software.Which of the FREE downloadable versions works BEST?

Wednesday 19 September 2007 @ 12:50 am

I have used Ares P2P shareware successfully in the past with few problems. Now with a new PC Notebook, I am trying to get one of the various downloadable versions of Ares to actually WORK on my new system.

After I down one Ares version, then I try to Search for files on the network. But the Search function frequently produces no results and stays stuck in Search mode until I stop it.

When I finally locate a file I want, I try to download it but the transfer progress is painfully much slower than my previous Ares version on my older computer. That older Laptop is now shot so I can’t boot it up to see which Ares version I had. My new Laptop is much faster with more RAM and hard drive space, so the hardware should not be the issue.

There is a new 2.0.9 version of Ares which promises all kinds of improvements to speed…but unlike the previous Free versions, v. 2.0.9 costs money as a subscription service.

One possible answer to my problem is that I’m now having to use Windows Vista (pre-installed on my new PC) whereas previously I was using Windows XP. Might Windows Vista be causing the problem or conflict?

I’ve also tried downloading with and without the Pop-up Blocker and Firewall enabled and still I get the same results.

So if you are experienced with Ares Galaxy, which version do you recommend that really works without all the delays?

Also note, I’m not tied to using Ares exclusively so if you can recommend an alternate P2P system that is free without all the search delays and slow downloads, your recommendation will be well appreciated. Thanks for your assistance!

I need a network driver for Win XP 1394 Net Adaptor?

Tuesday 18 September 2007 @ 4:35 am
win xp drivers

I recently installed Win XP Pro on my other computer. Previously, I had Win Vista (I hated it). However, the internet is not working on that computer. The computer is not recognizing a connection (I know the NETGEAR is working because the computer I’m using right now is running through the same router). In the device manager, the network adaptor is a “1394 Net Adapter”. Anyone know where I can get the driver to get the internet working?
It says 1394 connection, Connected, Firewalled, 1394 Net Adaptor. I didn’t look here before; seems like it’s connected but internet is not working.

upgrading windows XP

I currently have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1; my computer insists me to upgrade to SP2 but I want to know if that will erase the existing data on my PC (MS Office, personal documents, programs etc.) or not? And my computer also has a few moderate viruses as well as dual operating systems. Any advice?
