Looking to buy a new Laptop?

Wednesday 10 October 2007 @ 4:37 am

So with the lack of a functioning monitor, and no USB mouse capabilities, I’m going to attempt to get a new Laptop sooner rather than later.

Basically what I’m looking for is a Laptop that can handle the newer games coming out. I’m not talking “ZOMG CRYSIS RECOMMENDED REQS” but being able to play generally newer games at a good framerate, namely Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, Civilization 4, or even Crysis with at least minimum requirements (I understand if this is a longshot, or even not capable with my price-range) and a few others (listed below) and hopefully StarCraft 2 whenever it comes out, without having to overhaul the computer at all. While price is not a terrible issue, I would prefer to keep it under $1300. I will almost definitely use my own mouse, and I have no need for a Blu-Ray burner, or anything fancy like that.

Games I would hope to play:

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts – Recommended System Requirements
* Windows XP or Windows Vista
* 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent
* 1.0 GB RAM
* 9.0 GB of uncompressed free hard disk space
* 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series or better
* DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Civilization 4 – Minimum System Requirements
* Operating System: Windows 2000/XP
* Processor: 1.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor or equivalent
* Memory: 256 MB RAM (Windows 2000) / 512 MB RAM (Windows XP)
* Hard Disk Space: 1.7 GB Free
* Video: DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB video card with Hardware T&L support (GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better)
* Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
* DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0c (included) or higher

World in Conflict – Recommended System Requirements
System: Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent
Memory: 1GB RAM
Video Memory: 256 MB
hard drive Space: 8 GB

Crysis – MINIMUM System Requirements
System: Intel P4 2.8 GHz / AMD Athlon 2800+ / Intel Core 2.0 GHz or equivalent
RAM: 1GB
hard drive Space: 6GB
Video: NVIDIA 6800 GT 256 MB / ATI X800 Pro 256 MB or better

How does one uninstall an automatic XP security update?

Tuesday 9 October 2007 @ 8:05 am
xp security

I’ve just purchased a new bit of software which I can’t get to run. Apparently according to the software website I need to uninstall a specific MS security upgrade, is this a good idea, I have the latest version of Norton, would that not provide me with the security that I need?
Thanks Gandalf, I now know how to uninstall it . Thanks Oddball i’m now not sure I want to uninstall it. The software in question is a heros of might and magic V from ubisoft but i should make it clear that the uninstall was only mentioned in a forum and is not suggested by ubisoft.

Tcp Ip problems with Win Xp?

Monday 8 October 2007 @ 1:05 pm
win xp problems

Here it goes:
my connection was workin perfectly so i updated my antivirus and had to restart. after doing that my connection no longer acquired ips from the DSL modem nor from the LAN cable. (i have 2 different ISPs) I changed my ethernet cards twice and tried both types of connection on them and still didnt work.

when i try to repair the connection it says: could not repair TCP IP settings did not respond check your connection manager.

i’m pretty much sure it’s from the pc because the cable connection is working on my Laptop.
wasn’t able to system restore for some reason, didn’t also work from safe mode.
is there a way to deal with this except a format ?

I reinstalled Windows XP Pro on my Toshiba Tecra 9100, where do I get the drivers?

Friday 5 October 2007 @ 7:25 pm
win xp drivers

I got the Laptop off of a friend, and I reinstalled Windows to clear the computer off. I need the driver to my video card, but the system won’t recongize the card and therefore is unable to tell me what the card is and where I can go to download the drivers for it. I know it is the original card that came with the Laptop because she never changed the card. It is a Toshiba Tecra 9100 with Windows XP Pro. What do I do?
