How to Connect a Win98 to a Win XP computer to transfer files?

win xp

I have a USB to Ethernet male to male cable.Would that work to connect the computers together and transfer files? Or would I have to get a USB pc file transfer cable from a store? If I did that would I need software to transfer files? Or does the Win XP computer do all the work with the interface? I just want to transfer some of the important files over to my Win XP before I wipe the Win98 hard drive or just trash the whole thing. As you can tell I’m a total newbie at this.
These are home computers and I don’t have any networking hardware other than the cable below.I don’t want to spend a huge deal of money to set up a network or buy a Flash Drive.

    USE A REGULAR NETWORK!! It is easier. If u do, here’s what u should do:

    On the XP computer, find out the computer name. Then type in:
    //(Computer name here)

    It will end up being what u see if u click on “My Computer”
    Drag and drop
