Win XP SP2 Installation?

Saturday 15 December 2007 @ 6:48 pm
win xp installation

I have a desktop that initially had windows 98se. Since this machine was about 5 years old, it had a lot of clutter. I meanwhile had the full version of windows XP pro SP2. The funny thing is that since I wanted to remove all the old files with my old OS and load from scratch win XP I tried to install it. However, the system only allowed me to install XP while I was logged in, which surely installed XP but left the old clutter of files.
I read that the old files can be removed if the installation is done by booting to a Win XP, that protocol is supposed to format the hard drive completely. I checked that my boot preference was from the CD. But to my dismay the I dont get the format option and the computer boots up to the installed XP. Maybe something is not right with the CD. But I tried to check the CD if it boots up to give the format option at the start on my old Laptop and I got the same response as above.
I really want to format and do a clean install of Win XP on my desktop.

Is it true that Bluetooth-enabled devices just won’t operate with Windows Vista?

windows xp hardware conflicts

I recently purchased a Bluetooth-enabled wireless headset / earpiece for my wireless Notebook. When I attempted to install the software, it said that it was not compatible with Windows Vista but was compatible with Windows XP. I called the headset Tech support and they said that ALL Bluetooth-enabled devices have this interface problem and the one to blame is the folks who came up with Windows Vista which apparently doesn’t support Bluetooth devices.

That sounds like a really big problem but I’ve only heard from the headset manufacturer. Is it general knowledge that Bluetooth-enabled devices won’t work with Windows Vista? If so, is there some kind of fix or download that Windows has come up with to address this major hardware conflict?

Win XP Professional “my network places” has disapeared. How can I get it back?

win xp drivers

My Network Places on my Laptop‘s desktop was working fine until a few days ago. I can still use wireless and my LAN connection, but NOTHING shows up in my system tray or in “My Network Places”. I have a Dell Inspiron 600m Notebook, and I even re-installed the LAN and wireless drivers–still having same problem.

Please let me know what my solution options are, as I really do not want to re-install winXPprofessional unless I have to. I do have my 160GB drive partitioned in 3 partitions, if that whould help in re-installing win.

Script problem on WIN XP?

Monday 10 December 2007 @ 8:56 am
win xp security

Every once in a while, an alert window will pop up like a JavaScript confirmation box. It says that the script running “on this page” might cause my computer to run slowly and do I want to continue running the script.

Thing is – I don’t have any web browsers open. There are three other accounts on my computer, only one is logged-in but that other account doesn’t have any web browsers open either.

I’m not running an active desktop or anything which runs scripting as far as I know. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn’t show any programs using more than 2% at a time, and I know all the programs which are running.

This started about a month ago, maybe a bit longer. The new software I’ve installed is:

OpenOffice
Yahoo Widgets
Yahoo Messenger (which is totally shut down when i’m not using it)

Any ideas? Could it be a trojan? I’m running Norton Internet Security 2007 with the latest updates and they haven’t fouind a thing. Could it be spyware? Adware?
