You can BUY a Windows XP disk. Visit a retail store like STAPLES and buy it. That is the way to go, since you will have the DISK, in case you need to reinstall it someday. But get more RAM also. You should have 512MB if you want Windows XP to run well enough. (the Home version is fine).

Windows 2000 would be fine too. In this case, you might make due with just 256MB of RAM. Look for Windows 2000 Professional.

Look up your Toshiba Laptop with the model number at

    Good luck and Happy Computing!

You said that you formatted the hard drive and it “won’t take” anything other than ME, so I’m assuming you have a retail copy of Windows XP - upgrade version, that you purchased in a store.

When you try a new install on a formatted hard drive with WindowsXP, it will reach the point where it says there are no valid Windows installations (to upgrade from). At that point, you can insert your WindowsME disk and allow it to scan that and then the install will continue.

If the maufacturer has a “special” recovery disk (Like a Ghost image), and not a traditional WindowsME disk, then you will need to restore WinME on the system and then run the Windows XP upgrade from WindowsME.

If it “won’t take” it for some other reason, post exactly what the problem or message is. You can also look on the minimum system requirements for WindowsXP and your Laptop information to see if you meet them.
