SP3 is simply an update - a major update, but still an update. There is no need to do anything to your computer except download the update and wait for it to install. If you are not offered the update automatically, by Windows Update, you can get it from the Microsoft website
If you’re not prompted by Windows updates to install it, just download SP3 from here:
Just install, you won’t loose any data.
If you are worried about loosing your data, it never hurts to make a backup of all your files to an external hard drive first (I guess you were already making regular backups;)
I have done hundreds of this SP installation for clients and it never went wrong.
Just go for it!
Btw, after SP3 there’s a multitude of updates that have to be installed too. Be prepared to not being able to use the computer for an hour and a half, maybe more, depending on your computer.
You seem to be having a full install DVD of XP Pro SP3.
You can do the full reinstall from the DVD without any data loss - provided you do not do any formatting of the HDD, and you have a legal copy of the Windows.
But I would suggest you to download the SP3 from microsoft. You would have so much less headaches with programs and shortcuts.

-download service pack 3.
-close any programes running (internet exploere, etc,)
-run service pack 3.
it’s going to take a while and won’t loose any documents and data as SP3 only changes system files, not your documents.

first transfer all important data to cds or dvds. than proceed to down load sp3
the DVD you have is a full reinstallation. just download the sp from the microsoft website and it will install properly without reformating your PC.
